Day 1: Angkor What?

Bad joke aside, many people know Angkor Wat for the image of its principal temple with its sky-piercing conical towers reminiscent of the ultimate sand castle creation.

But Angkor Wat, the park and architectural complex, is so much more than that...

The park itself is roughly the size of the city of Rome, and is one of the world's cultural marvels, showcasing the great Khmer civilization between the 8th and 14th century.

This verdant masterpiece is chock full of unique architectural gems - one after the other - and intermingles in an "Indiana Jones" sort of way with its amazing and aggressive jungle vegetation.

Further add a series of amazing lakes, ponds, waterways, gardens, sculpture, restaurants, populated villages, elephants, misbehaved hordes of monkeys and endless miles of tree-covered lanes into the mix and you have the ultimate picnic destination.

I used to imagine that the French King's palace at Versailles was the ultimate picnic destination, but Angkor Wat makes it look like a tasty appetizer, in comparison!

Tomorrow, I'll post about a few of those architectural marvels, including our favorite one that we seemingly discovered on our own.
